Weather the Storm - Women Prepare

is a project of the National Rural Women’s Coalition and is proudly funded a by Office for Women, part of the the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.  The project will run from July 2011 to June 2012.

Women are warmly invited to participate in this new, free program being offered in Laurimar, Victoria in late February 2012 and Eungella and Midge Point, near Mackay, North Queensland in April/May.

The program will bring women from local communities together to discuss, plan and support each other to be more prepared for disasters that might threaten the local area.  The program is free with free onsite childcare available.  Morning tea is provided so all participants need to do is come along.

Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in disasters.  While natural disasters such as fire and flood have made headlines, there are many other possibilities. Prolonged loss of electricity, water or food supplies, pollution or chemical spills, pandemics and strike action are all possibilities.

Any of these have the potential to seriously impact us at any time.  We may become housebound for days, we may be unable to access basic services or food, we may need to evacuate or we may not have a home to live in.

Women, especially those with children, have particular needs and vulnerabilities during and after a disaster.  Women also make a unique and vital contribution to preparation and recovery.
Being prepared for any and all possibilities – an ‘all hazards’ approach, takes some thought and preparation but even a little bit of both can make a huge difference to a family’s experience of a disaster.

Often we want to get organised and prepared, it is the sort of thing we think about and talk about - but we never find the time.  Here is an opportunity. The Program is free, with free on site childcare with refreshments provided.

If you don't live near the pilot area and you think this program would suit you and your community, please contact us.

How prepared are you?

Picture
Have you ever thought  “I've got a few things organised, but I‘m not really prepared" or

“I wish I were better prepared but I don’t know where to start. It’s all so overwhelming”?

Have you thought about all the types of disaster that could effect you?  Have you talked them through with your partner? Your children?

Do you have a written emergency plan?  Have you and your family practised your plan?

Would you and your family be prepared if you were housebound for three days by an emergency?  How about three weeks?

Have you thought about how you think and act when you’re scared? Stressed? When your children are stressed?

Have you thought about how you feel calmer more in control and you make better decisions when you are prepared and know what to do?

Have you ever thought “I’m prepared, but how can I help my community be more prepared?”

If you answered yes to any of these questions, register your interest in the ‘Weather the Storm – Women Prepare” program, to prepare in a thought-provoking and positive way.
